Heads up, taxpayers and parents: We’ve audited the upcoming SPURGER ISD agenda. There are 4 items targeting parental consent and taxpayer funds that need your immediate attention before the gavel falls.

Adopting the 2026-2027 Property Tax Rate
The board is scheduled to vote on the new property tax rate for the upcoming year. This is the single most important vote affecting every homeowner’s tax bill. Often, districts will advertise a ‘lower’ rate that is still higher than the ‘no-new-revenue’ rate, resulting in a tax increase due to rising property values. Taxpayers must demand the board adopt the no-new-revenue rate or publicly justify the tax hike.
Response
PACK THE ROOM: Show up to the meeting on August 27th. Contact the board and demand they vote to adopt the No-New-Revenue tax rate. Any rate higher than that is a tax increase, plain and simple.
π° Impact: Potential property tax increase for every property owner in the district.

Using Tax Dollars to Fund Political Lobbying
The board is voting to approve a delegate for the TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) Delegate Assembly. TASB is a registered lobby group that frequently opposes taxpayer-friendly reforms in Austin, such as property tax relief and school choice. This action uses local Spurger ISD tax dollars to fund political activity that may not align with the interests of local taxpayers.
Response
DEMAND A RECORDED VOTE: Contact the board and ask: ‘Why are our local tax dollars being used to fund TASB’s political machine? Please vote NO on sending a delegate and reconsider the district’s membership in this lobby group.’
π° Impact: Tax dollars diverted to political lobbying efforts in Austin.

Undisclosed Spending Over $25,000
The agenda lists a vote to approve ‘Purchases over $25,000’ with no supporting documentation or description. This prevents the public from knowing what is being bought, from which vendor, and whether the expense is justified. Voting on significant, undisclosed spending items undermines basic financial transparency.
Response
DEMAND THE DETAILS: Contact the board before the meeting and ask for a detailed breakdown of the proposed purchases over $25,000. This item should be postponed until a full list of vendors, items, and costs is made public.
π° Impact: At least $25,000 in taxpayer funds spent without public disclosure.

Approval of ‘Wellness Plan’ Without Public Review
The board is set to approve the district’s SHAC (School Health Advisory Council) Wellness Plan. While seemingly routine, these plans can be a vehicle for introducing controversial health curricula, student surveys, or social-emotional learning initiatives. The agenda provides no copy of the plan for parents and taxpayers to review before the vote.
Response
DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Contact the board and request that the full SHAC Wellness Plan be posted on the district’s website for public review immediately. Ask them to delay the vote until parents have had a chance to see what’s in it.
π° Impact: Potential for controversial curriculum or student data collection to be approved without parental oversight.
