WARNING (LEVEL 7)
Policy Reduces Public Comment Time as Turnout Rises
📅 October 14, 2026
The district’s public comment policy automatically reduces the time allotted to each speaker as more people sign up to speak. When seven or more citizens participate, their time is cut from five minutes to just two, effectively penalizing public engagement on high-interest topics. This ‘sliding scale’ can be used to silence dissent and rush through controversial items when community interest is highest.
Response

Contact the Medina Valley ISD Board of Trustees (see the Official Agenda link for contact details): ‘The sliding scale for public comment in Board Policy BEC (Local) punishes public participation. I urge you to amend the policy to guarantee a consistent, reasonable amount of time for every citizen, regardless of how many people sign up.’
