Heads up, Texas taxpayers: we’ve reviewed the upcoming LEANDER ISD agenda and found 3 items that deserve your attention before the gavel falls.
ALERT (LEVEL 9)
District Facing $30 Million Budget Deficit
📅 October 15, 2026
Leander ISD’s budget is in crisis. A combination of lower-than-expected student enrollment and soaring healthcare costs has created a projected $30 million deficit for the 2026-2027 school year. This shortfall is so severe that the district’s emergency savings (fund balance) is projected to fall below the minimum level required by the board’s own policy, threatening the district’s financial stability and credit rating.
Response

DEMAND A RECOVERY PLAN: Contact the Leander ISD Board of Trustees (see district website for contact info). Ask them regarding Items 7.C.1 and 7.C.2: ‘A $30 million deficit and a fund balance below the required minimum is a fiscal emergency. What specific, immediate spending cuts are you directing the administration to make to close this gap and restore the fund balance?’

💰 Impact: $30M Projected Deficit
WARNING (LEVEL 7)
Hundreds of Library Books on Fast-Track for Approval
📅 October 15, 2026
The board is set to approve a massive list of new library books for all grade levels as a single ‘Consent Agenda’ item, limiting public review. The list includes politically-charged titles such as ‘Lies My Teacher Told Me’ and ‘Book Bans: Reading Under Siege.’ Bundling hundreds of books, including controversial ones, into one vote prevents meaningful parental oversight of the materials being placed in school libraries.
Response

DEMAND A RECORDED VOTE: Contact the Leander ISD Board of Trustees and demand that ‘Consent Agenda Item 5.A be pulled for separate discussion and a roll-call vote. Parents deserve to know where each trustee stands on the books being purchased for our students.’

💰 Impact: Politicized Library Content
WARNING (LEVEL 6)
District to Send Millions in Local Taxes to Austin
📅 October 15, 2026
Under Texas’ ‘Robin Hood’ school finance system, Leander ISD is classified as property-wealthy and is forced to send a portion of its local property tax revenue to the state for redistribution. This process, called ‘recapture’ or ‘purchasing attendance credits,’ means millions of dollars are taken from Leander students and taxpayers. This happens even as the district faces its own $30 million budget deficit.
Response

EDUCATE & ADVOCATE: The board must comply with state law on Item 7.C.3, but the law is the problem. Contact your State Representative and Senator: ‘Leander ISD is being forced to send millions to Austin while facing a $30M deficit. It’s time to reform the ‘Robin Hood’ system and keep our local tax dollars here to serve our students.’

💰 Impact: Millions in Recapture Payments
