⚠️ Warning (LEVEL 8)
Tax Rate ‘Cut’ Hides $68 Tax Hike on Average Home
📅 September 28, 2026
The district is advertising a lower tax rate, but due to rising property appraisals, the proposed rate will increase the tax bill on the average home by $67.69. The district is proposing the highest possible tax rate ($0.980700) it can adopt without triggering a voter-approval election.
Response

Show up to the Public Meeting on September 28th to speak. Email the Hitchcock ISD Board: ‘A lower rate that results in a higher tax bill is not a tax cut. Adopt the No-New-Revenue Rate that keeps my tax bill flat.’

💰 Impact: Higher Property Taxes ($68/avg home)
⚠️ Warning (LEVEL 7)
District Slashes Public Comment Time by 40%
📅 September 28, 2026
Board documents attached to the agenda show the time allotted for each citizen to speak at meetings has been reduced from five minutes to three minutes. This change limits the public’s ability to hold the board accountable on important issues like the proposed tax increase.
Response

Contact the Hitchcock ISD Board: ‘Why are you reducing public comment time right before a major tax vote? Restore the five-minute rule for public speakers under Item 3 to ensure full public input.’

💰 Impact: Reduced Public Access
