Student Data Workshop: What Are They Measuring?
The board is holding a “Data Workshop” to discuss “Student Growth.” While this could be a routine review of academic progress, these sessions are often where districts introduce controversial data collection on students’ attitudes, beliefs, and home life under the guise of “Social Emotional Learning” or “mental health.” Taxpayers and parents need to know exactly what data is being collected, who will have access to it, and if they can opt their children out before a new data-mining system is put in place.
Response
DEMAND THE DETAILS: Email the Gonzales ISD Board of Trustees. ‘Regarding the ‘Student Growth’ data workshop on July 27, please clarify what specific metrics will be discussed. Will this workshop include non-academic data collection such as Social Emotional Learning (SEL) surveys, mental health screenings, or ‘climate’ surveys? Parents have a right to know what data is being collected on their children.’ (Taxpayers should verify board member contact information on the district’s official website.)
💰 Impact: Potential for future spending on data-mining software (like Panorama Education) and the creation of a permanent data surveillance system for non-academic student attributes.
