🚨 HIGH CONCERN (LEVEL 8)
$270k Contract for Student Data-Mining Software
📅 2026-08-22
The board is set to approve a $269,804 contract with Curriculum Associates for ‘i-Ready’ software. This program uses ‘adaptive assessments’ and ‘personalized instruction,’ which means a computer algorithm will be teaching your child and building a detailed data profile on them, outside of direct parental view.
Recommended Action Plan

DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Contact the District Office at (562) 210-2000 and email the Superintendent’s office at sroberts@nlmusd.org. Ask: ‘Who owns the student data collected by i-Ready? Can parents review all ‘personalized’ lesson paths before our children see them? This item must be pulled for public discussion.’

💰 Taxpayer Impact: $269,804.00
⚠️ NEEDS REVIEW (LEVEL 7)
$96k to Train Teachers on i-Ready Platform
📅 2026-08-22
The board plans to spend another $96,000 with Curriculum Associates for ‘Professional Learning’ to implement the i-Ready software. The vendor requires this training, locking the district into their system and their specific educational philosophies.
Recommended Action Plan

QUESTION THE SPENDING: Contact the District Office at (562) 210-2000. Ask: ‘Why are we spending nearly $100,000 on vendor-mandated training? What specific pedagogical methods, beyond just using the software, will be taught to our teachers in these 40 sessions?’

💰 Taxpayer Impact: $96,000.00
