New Student Software Contract Requires Parental Consent

The Board is voting on a three-year, $49,200 contract to purchase the IXL Learning software for all middle school students. While the software is for core academic subjects, the vendor’s own contract (Section 5) legally requires the school district to obtain ‘advance written consent from all parents or guardians’ for children under 13. This is an opportunity to ensure the district is transparent about what data is being collected and to hold them accountable for following their own rules on parental consent before locking taxpayers into a long-term deal.

DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Email Superintendent Tim Walker at tim.walker@northcantonschools.org: ‘Regarding Item N.4, the IXL contract, how will the district obtain the required written parental consent for students under 13? Please provide parents with the specific consent form and the company’s data privacy policy before this contract is approved.’
