⚠️ NEEDS REVIEW (LEVEL 6)
Biased News Service in Classrooms
📅 2026-08-19
The district is renewing its contract for NewsELA, a digital news service used as ‘supplemental curriculum’ in English, Science, and Social Studies. This platform has been criticized for presenting current events with a strong political bias, potentially exposing students to one-sided viewpoints on sensitive topics without parental knowledge or balance.
Recommended Action Plan

DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Contact the District Office (see the Official Agenda link for contact info) and ask the Board: ‘What is the total cost for the NewsELA renewal under Item 9.A? What is the process for parents to review the specific articles assigned to their children through this platform before they are used in class?’

💰 Taxpayer Impact: Undisclosed Renewal Cost
