New Policy Allows In-Home ‘Wellness Checks’
A proposed new policy (204.1) for virtual students requires district staff to ‘visibly see and communicate with’ your child every week. If they can’t, the policy allows for an ‘in-person wellness check’ at your home within 24 hours, even on weekends. This policy inserts the school into your home under the guise of checking attendance.
Recommended Action Plan
PACK THE ROOM: This is a first reading. Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org and demand a ‘NO’ vote on Policy 204.1 under Item 5.C. ‘My home is not an extension of the school building. The district has no right to conduct in-person wellness checks on my child.’
π° Impact: Your Family’s Privacy

Policy Revision Allows School to Hide Info From Parents
A revision to the bullying policy (249) would allow the principal to ‘delay’ notifying you about an incident involving your child. If staff decide that telling you puts your child at ‘risk of abuse, neglect or other imminent harm,’ they can keep you in the dark. This gives the school the power to decide what parents are allowed to know about their own children.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND A ‘NO’ VOTE: This is a first reading of a dangerous policy. Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org: ‘I am the primary caregiver for my child. Vote NO on the revisions to Policy 249 in Item 5.C that allow the district to delay parental notification.’
π° Impact: Your Right to Know

Title IX Policy Redefines Harassment, Bypasses Parents
The revised Title IX policy (103) adds ‘sexual orientation’ as a protected class and allows the district to impose ‘supportive measures’ on students without a formal complaint ever being filed. These measures, like changing schedules or enforcing no-contact orders, can alter your child’s school day based on an accusation, before any investigation or parental input.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org, regarding the first reading of Policy 103 in Item 5.C. ‘Supportive measures must not be used to punish students or bypass parental consent before a formal complaint is investigated. Vote NO on this overreach.’
π° Impact: Due Process for Students

District Approving More Screen-Based Learning
The district is renewing contracts for IXL ($8,715) and Zearn ($10,500), two student-facing software programs for ELA, Math, and Science. This spending continues to replace direct teacher instruction with screen time, without public evidence that these programs improve academic outcomes.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND PROOF: These renewals are in the ‘Bills to be Approved’ under the Finance Report (Item 5.D). Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org: ‘Before approving the IXL and Zearn renewals, the Board must publish independent evidence of academic gains and the total daily screen time these products add.’
π° Impact: $19,215

Restrictive Rules Limit Public Comment at Meetings
Board policy (903), detailed in items 2.I and 4.A, requires parents to sign up for public comment on a ‘Yellow Card’ in person by 7:00 PM for a 6:00 PM meeting. This rule can prevent working parents who arrive late from speaking and makes it harder for the public to hold the board accountable.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND YOUR RIGHT TO SPEAK: Use public comment time to address this restrictive policy. Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org: ‘Policy 903’s 7:00 PM in-person signup deadline for public comment disenfranchises working parents. The board works for us; we should be able to speak.’

District Pays for ‘Emotional ABCs’ Program
Buried in the ‘Bills to be Approved’ is a $228 payment to ‘Emotional ABCs, Inc,’ a known Social Emotional Learning (SEL) vendor. While the amount is small, it represents an ideological purchase that shifts focus from academics to managing student emotions.
Recommended Action Plan
OPT-OUT ALERT: Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org, regarding the payment to Emotional ABCs, Inc. in Item 5.D. ‘Which schools and grades will use this SEL program? Please provide the specific parental opt-out form before this is voted on.’
π° Impact: $228

District Pays $6,772 for Undisclosed ‘Consulting Services’
The bills list includes a $6,772 payment to a ‘Leticia M. Rodriguez’ for ‘Consulting Svcs’ with no further explanation. Parents have a right to know who the district is hiring and what services they are providing, especially when it involves large sums of money.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND ANSWERS: Email the School Board Secretary, Mrs. Becky Maxwell at becky_maxwell@etownschools.org, regarding the payment to Leticia M. Rodriguez in Item 5.D. ‘What specific services did this consultant provide to the district? Parents deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent.’
π° Impact: $6,772
