Discussion of State-Level FOIA Restriction Proposal

On October 1, 2026, the Board will direct its delegate on a proposed Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) resolution to amend the state’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The proposed amendments would permit public bodies to require identity verification for requesters and recover more costs, which could be used to obstruct public access to records and hinder oversight.
Intake Action

PRE-VOTE ACTION: Item 5.E concerns the Board’s direction to its IASB delegate on a proposed resolution to restrict FOIA. Send a letter to the Board before the October 1, 2026 meeting, urging them to direct their delegate to vote ‘no’ on the ‘FOIA Safeguards’ resolution, as it could be used to obstruct legitimate public oversight.
