Appointing a New Board Member Behind Closed Doors

The board is holding a special meeting to appoint a new, unelected member to fill a vacancy. While Illinois law allows them to discuss and select the person in a closed session (Item 5.a), this means the final deliberation happens away from public view. This new member will have a vote on every future policy, from the budget to what’s taught in the classroom. It is critical that the board appoints someone who represents the community’s values, not a pre-selected insider.

Recommended Action Plan

DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Attend the meeting and speak during ‘Public Comments’ (Item 3). Urge the board to be transparent about the candidates and the selection criteria during the public discussion (Item 4). Contact the District Office to demand a public list of all applicants being considered for the open position. Remind the board they work for the parents and taxpayers.
