Heads up! We have scanned the upcoming agenda for Southeast Polk Comm School District. We found 3 items that need your immediate attention before the vote.
| ALERT (LEVEL 4) |

District Spending on Student Screen-Time Software
The district is paying Lexia Learning Systems, a vendor of student-facing educational software, under Consent Agenda item I.F.3. Before approving more screen-based programs, parents have a right to know if they actually improve academic outcomes and how much classroom time they will consume.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Contact the District Office (see the Official Agenda link) and ask the Board to pull the ‘Claims and Accounts’ from Consent Agenda Item I.F.3 for a separate discussion. Ask them: ‘Before approving payment to Lexia Learning Systems, please provide the independent, non-vendor-funded evidence that this software produces academic gains, and state how much daily screen time it adds for a typical student.’
π° Impact: $518.10

Vague ‘Technology Update’ on Agenda
Under item III.C, the Director of Technology will provide an update to the board. These presentations are often used to introduce future large-scale purchases of student devices or software, which increase screen time and can come with privacy risks.
Recommended Action Plan
ATTEND & ASK QUESTIONS: Parents should attend the meeting or watch the livestream to hear the ‘Technology Update’ under item III.C. If new software or devices are discussed, be prepared to ask about academic effectiveness, data privacy, and impact on instructional time during Public Comment at the next meeting.
π° Impact: Future Spending & Screen Time

‘Crisis Prevention’ Membership Renewal
A $200 membership renewal for the ‘Crisis Prevention Institute’ is included in the bills under item I.F.3. While this may be for standard safety training, this vendor’s programs can sometimes include ‘restorative’ or therapeutic techniques that fall under the umbrella of Social Emotional Learning (SEL).
Recommended Action Plan
Monitor: Track this vendor. If the district proposes broader ‘Crisis Prevention’ training for staff or students, we will need to scrutinize the curriculum for SEL or ‘restorative practice’ components. No immediate action required.
π° Impact: $200
