Bullying Policy Update Includes Parental Notification Carve-Out
A first reading of Policy #249 includes a provision allowing the district to delay parental notification of a bullying complaint if the principal determines notification could place a student at risk of ‘abuse, neglect or other imminent harm.’ This creates a mechanism for withholding information from parents about their child’s involvement in a bullying incident.
Policy Use
BRIEF STATE AFFAIRS: Item 4.B contains a parental notification carve-out in the draft bullying policy. Flag this language for the state team as a model of how districts can create exceptions to parental rights, even when appearing to support notification.

District Considers Adding Restorative Practices to Discipline Policy
The board is holding a second reading of Policy #218, which proposes adding ‘restorative practices’ to the Code of Student Conduct. This change moves away from traditional consequences for student misconduct and aligns with a national trend of limiting suspension and expulsion.
Policy Use
TRACK AND DOCUMENT: Item 3.A is a second reading of a policy adding restorative practices. Document the final vote and retrieve the adopted text to add to the state implementation tracker for discipline policy changes.

Wellness Policy Update Proposes New Social Media Curriculum
A first reading of Policy #246 proposes adding a ‘social media literacy program’ to the curriculum. This program would instruct students on the mental and physical effects of social media and safe use, expanding the school’s instructional role into a sensitive area. The policy also proposes prohibiting the calculation of student Body Mass Index (BMI).
Policy Use
TRACK AND DOCUMENT: Item 4.A introduces a new social media curriculum. Request any associated instructional materials, calendar the second reading, and add the district to the state tracker for new curriculum adoptions.
Policy Lever: New Curriculum Mandate

The district’s policy update plan schedules future reviews for Policy #102 Academic Standards and Policy #105 Curriculum. These reviews, marked ‘TBD,’ represent future opportunities for the board to make significant changes to what students are taught.
Policy Use
WATCH: Item 2.A’s policy plan lists future reviews for Policy 102 (Academic Standards) and 105 (Curriculum). Monitor future Policy Committee agendas for these items to appear for first reading.
