District to Select New “Wellness” Rules from Vague Template
The Wellness Committee is reviewing an updated ‘Wellness Policy’ (8510) using a template from a policy vendor. This template contains dozens of optional clauses, giving the committee wide latitude to create new rules on everything from nutrition to physical activity and other ‘wellness’ initiatives. This is the key moment for parents to see what’s being chosen and influence the outcome before it becomes official policy.
Recommended Action Plan
INFLUENCE THE DRAFT: Join the virtual Wellness Committee meeting on Oct 5. Demand that the committee review every optional clause in the ‘updated policy’ template for Item 2.B publicly and justify why each one is or is not being selected. This is the only chance to shape this policy before it goes to the full board.
π° Impact: Parental Input Bypassed

Federal “Gender Identity” Mandate in School Wellness Policy
The district’s Wellness Policy (8510) includes a nondiscrimination clause required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to receive federal school lunch funding. This clause forces the district to adopt ‘gender identity and sexual orientation’ as protected classes, potentially impacting policies on bathrooms, sports, and pronouns.
Recommended Action Plan
ATTEND THE COMMITTEE MEETING: This is a virtual meeting. Join via the Google Meet link in the agenda. Ask the Wellness Committee during Open Forum: ‘Regarding Policy 8510, what specific district policies on bathrooms, sports, or pronouns must be changed to comply with the USDA’s ‘gender identity’ mandate to keep our school lunch funding? Parents deserve to know the full cost of these federal dollars.’
π° Impact: Federal Strings Attached

“Wellness” Policy Includes Staff Health Screenings
The current and proposed Wellness policies include provisions for staff wellness programs, such as ‘periodic screening…for blood pressure, blood cholesterol, body mass index, and/or other health indicators’ and ‘health-risk appraisals.’ While currently aimed at staff, this language sets a dangerous precedent for future expansion to students without parental consent.
Recommended Action Plan
DEMAND A BRIGHT LINE: Join the virtual meeting on Oct 5. Ask the committee to add explicit language to Policy 8510 stating that ‘no health screenings, surveys, or health-risk appraisals of any kind will ever be administered to students without prior, written, opt-in parental consent for each specific instance.’
π° Impact: Your Child’s Health Privacy
