Board to Vote on Lobbying Plan to Weaken Public Records Law

Under Item 5.E, the Board will direct its delegate how to vote on resolutions for the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB), which lobbies the state legislature. One proposed resolution, ‘FOIA Safeguards,’ would change the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to make it easier for districts to deny public records requests they deem ‘abusive’ or ‘burdensome.’ This could be used to block parents from accessing documents about curriculum, spending, and policies.

Recommended Action Plan

DEMAND TRANSPARENCY: Contact the Wauconda CUSD 118 Board of Education before the meeting (see the Official Agenda link for contact info). Urge them: ‘Regarding Item 5.E, please direct your IASB delegate to vote NO on the ‘FOIA Safeguards’ resolution.
