Tax Rate Increase Despite Falling Property Values
| π
Public Hearing on August 31, 2026 |
Troup ISD is holding a public hearing on a proposal to increase the total property tax rate from $0.8324 to $0.8361. This tax rate hike comes at a time when the district’s overall certified property values have fallen by over 5% ($27 million). By increasing the rate while property values are down, the district is ensuring it collects more money from a smaller economic pie, placing a heavier burden on remaining taxpayers. The presentation does not include a comparison to the no-new-revenue rate, which is the rate that would collect the same amount of money as last year and represents a true no-tax-increase budget.
Response
ATTEND THE HEARING: This is the public’s only chance to speak on the proposed budget and tax rate. Contact the Troup ISD Board of Trustees via the district website: ‘Why is the district increasing the tax rate when overall property values have fallen by 5%? Please present and adopt the No-New-Revenue tax rate to protect homeowners.’
π° Impact: Increased tax levy on homeowners during a period of declining property values.
